Thinking of making the switch from a fossil fuel-powered car to electric? You’ll be joining the growing numbers of drivers around the UK. But before you follow through with an electric vehicle purchase, there are a few things you should know. Firstly, you will need to invest in a charger for your car. The good news is that with the government pushing for a reduction in carbon emissions, they’re currently offering discounts on EV chargers. We’re revealing how to get your hands on the OZEV grant to save money on your electric vehicle purchase.

Both businesses and members of the public can apply. How you approach getting a discount will vary depending on whether you’re a business or looking to install a charger at your home.

The people behind the grant, OZEV, are a government department known as the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles. Formerly known as OLEV (Office for Low Emission Vehicles), they changed their name to become more in line with the government’s ambitious targets to cut the UK’s carbon emissions by 78% by 2035 – with an ultimate view to become net zero by 2050.

Commercial OZEV grant

The Workplace Charging Scheme is suitable for businesses, charities and public sector organisations. With this grant, you can receive up to £350 off each EV chargepoint, for up to 40 sockets. Getting the grant is simple. You can purchase through an OZEV-approved installer or pay for your installation in full and claim for the discount afterwards. Technical specifications apply, so make sure your EV charger is eligible for the grant before making a purchase.

Domestic OZEV grant

The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) is designed for homeowners looking to purchase an EV chargepoint. This gives you up to £350 off a single chargepoint. Simply purchase your chargepoint through an OZEV-approved installer and they will be able to discount the grant money off your purchase. Technical specifications apply, so make sure your charger is eligible.
